Local Bookstore and Tennyson Construction
I worked in an independent bookstore while I waited for my acupuncture license. Independent books stores are run by passionate people who flat out love books, reading, and community. Working there, I was able to see first hand the challenges faced by the owners of small independent bookstores. Amazon, eBay, Barnes & Noble, and now the Kindle, iPad, and other eBook readers are all making it difficult for any small bookstore in the best of times.
Not far from Healing Village Collective is a great store, The Bookery Nook. This store faces all the same challenges as any independent bookstore - plus the CITY HAS TORN UP THE ENTIRE STREET IN FRONT OF THEIR STORE. The construction has been going on for weeks, and from what I am told will stretch into the autumn. This has effectively destroyed the majority of foot traffic in the area. I have not spoken to the owners directly; however, I cannot help but think the construction is just a huge headache.
If you are in need of a book this summer, consider driving over to The Bookery Nook. Purchasing books from a local dealer keeps your money supporting the community, and in this case is helping a local business with deal with on-going headache.

(Seriously.)
Here is the Westword reporting on the issue.

Old Bicycles Change Lives
Over the weekend I attended the Rocky Mountain Bicycle Festival and met a pretty amazing group of people.
The organization Bicycles for Humanity collects old, used bicycles here in the U.S. and ships them to colleagues in Namibia and Zambia. Primarily the bicycles are given to healthcare workers to greatly extend the range they are able to travel to treat people. This area is rural; and for the majority of residents, the cost of a simple bicycle is well out of reach. The group has a great video here.
If you have one or more old bicycles, or just bike parts, sitting around consider dropping it off at one of the local shops listed on the website. It is a simple act that can have a huge, huge, impact.

If you go, look for me, I will be wearing a huge orange bike helmet.
